About Me

I am an ethnographer of sound and music with a regional focus on Kenya. My PhD dissertation (Columbia U, 2009) is a study of vocal expression, emplacement, and ethnic identification on Kenya’s “Swahili coast.” In addition to the dissertation itself (available from UMI), other publications stemming from this research are slowly making their way through the “pipeline.” Meanwhile, I am conducting research in Nairobi for a new project on digital technologies and the Kenyan music industry. This research is connected to the MusDig project at the University of Oxford.
